Department of Technology Management and Innovation
Important: All cross-registration requests require students to complete the MOT and IE Cross-Registration Form, regardless of the NYU school or department in which the course is housed. This form allows your advisor to verify that the course meets your program requirements and ensures compliance with the host department’s cross-registration process.
Cross-registration policies and procedures vary widely across NYU schools and departments. To avoid delays or rejections, read the full instructions carefully–including the school- and department-specific information further down–before submitting any forms.
This process is required both to follow the cross-registration policies of other NYU schools/departments and to verify that your requested course can be applied toward your TMI degree requirements. Completing the form allows your advisor and program director to confirm course eligibility before you register.
Graduate students in the Management of Technology (MOT) and Industrial Engineering (IE) programs may take graduate-level courses at other NYU schools if:
You have completed at least 18 credits in your program.
Your cumulative GPA is 3.4 or higher.
Tandon grad students may take up to 3 courses (9 credits total) at other NYU schools outside of Tandon. Please read the Tandon Cross-School Registration policy here for full details.
Additional Departmental Policy – MOT Students:
Students in the MOT program may apply a maximum of 9 credits taken outside of the MOT program—this includes graduate-level courses offered by other departments at Tandon and by other NYU schools—toward their degree requirements. Courses that exceed this limit will not count toward degree completion.
Students should plan carefully to ensure that any cross-department or cross-school courses fall within the allowable 9-credit limit.

What to expect
Only courses listed on the Non-Stern Course Schedule are available.

Stern professors cannot override course restrictions or waive prerequisites.
Approval to register does not guarantee a seat–registration is first come, first served
Results are typically sent to advisors within one week of submission

If your request is not approved, your advisor will notify you. Please have a backup class in case your request is not approved.
Self-registration Opens for Fall 2025: July 29, 2025
FRE has discontinued its cross-registration form used in previous semesters; however, TMI students still need to complete the MOT and IE Cross-Registration Form to confirm the course will count towards program requirements. Eligible students may self-register for FRE-GY courses directly in Albert starting on the date above.
What to Know Before You Register
FRE will not evaluate or confirm prerequisites. However, students are expected to have knowledge equivalent to the following NYU Tandon courses:
MA-UY 2034 (Linear Algebra and Differential Equations)
MA-UY 2114 (Calculus III)
MA-UY 2224 (Probability)
CS-UY 1114 (Intro to Computer Science)
This prerequisite guidance will be posted on FRE’s cross-registration website. Students are expected to assess their own readiness and should not enroll in courses they are not prepared for.
If you are unsure whether you meet these expectations, consult your TMI advisor before registration opens.
Degree Requirements
FRE-GY courses may or may not count toward your degree.
As part of the MOT and IE Cross-Registration Form, you’ll be asked to indicate whether the course should apply to your degree requirements. Your advisor will review and confirm during the approval process.
You can register directly in Albert, but it’s your responsibility to ensure the course aligns with your academic plan.
As with any other cross-registration course, TMI students will need to submit the MOT and IE Cross-Registration Form. School-specific information on the CSE Fall 2025 Cross-Registration process has not yet been updated. Keep your eye on the CSE Department page for more information.
Other NYU Schools or Departments
If you’re interested in a course from a department or school not listed above:
Submit the MOT and IE Cross-Registration Form.
Email your TMI advisor with:
Course title and number
Course description or syllabus
A brief explanation of how it fits in your academic or career goals
This part of the process allows your program director to verify whether the course is appropriate for your degree before you proceed. It also helps ensure we’re following the host department’s cross-registration procedures
If approved by the Program Director:
You'll be responsible for contacting the host department or consulting their website to learn their registration process and how to gain access to the course.
