Field Experience Associates (FEAs) participate in the development and implementation of the field experiences programs administered by the Faculty of Education. The faculty, in designing and developing its programs, seeks to integrate theory with practice and FEAs play a key role in achieving this integration of on-campus coursework with Field Experience. Field Experience Associates also act as liaisons between the University of Alberta and its school partners.
Assist placement coordinators in placing pre-service teachers for the IFX and AFX field experiences;
Develop and teach EDFX 325/350 seminar and ensure pre-service teachers understand processes and policies related to field experiences
Support mentor teachers, pre-service teachers, school coordinators and university facilitators in understanding their roles and responsibilities
Support second attempt students
Support students requiring accommodations
Provide support for IFX and AFX regional placements
Provide support for EDFX 495 field experience students
Provide a differentiated level of support to mentor teachers, and pre-service teachers depending on needs
Ensure mentor teachers receive introductory emails from pre-service teachers prior to the start of the IFX field experience
Provide weekly updates to mentor teachers, pre-service teachers, and school coordinators
Support mentor teachers in issuing Notifications of Concern, if necessary
Oversee and manage all placement terminations
Ensure that IFX student have prepared the initial growth plan (by day 10)
Guide pre-service teachers who want to apply for the Alberta Retired Teachers Award;
Collect final assessments from IFX mentor teachers, review the draft of the final assessment and provide feedback to the mentor teacher, if needed. Submit an official copy of the final assessment to eClass for student access
Support University Facilitators in the completion of their roles and responsibilities
Communicate weekly with university facilitators and monitor for potential issues
Support university facilitators in problem-solving to ensure the best possible outcome in dealing with placement concerns;
Support university facilitators in issuing Notifications of Concern, if necessary
Oversee and manage all placement terminations
Collect final assessments from University Facilitators, review the draft of the final assessment and provide feedback if needed. Submit an official copy of the final assessment to eClass for student access
University facilitators (UFs) are experienced educators who support pre-service and mentor teachers in understanding and fulfilling their roles and responsibilities during a field experience. As the main ‘go to’ person during a practicum, both pre-service and mentor teachers rely on UFs to provide accurate information and timely assistance.
attends the zone Meet & Greet (online) prior to the start of Advanced Field Experience (AFX) and the Introductory Field Experience (IFX)
receives and tracks the pre-service teacher introductory forms prior to the start of the field experience
maintains regular communication and conducts regular meetings in assigned schools during the field experience
IFX - a minimum of 3 meetings per term
AFX - a minimum of 4 meetings per term
is readily available to respond to emerging needs, and provide a differentiated level of support to pre-service teachers and mentor teachers
provides weekly update emails to mentor teachers, pre-service teachers, and school coordinators
observes a pre-service teacher’s lesson and provides formative feedback
supports pre-service teachers and mentor teachers when a Notice of Concern is necessary
ensures the field experience associate is aware of potential issues,
ensures that AFX and IFX pre-service teachers have prepared their growth plans as required
reviews the final assessment, and forwards it to the zone FEA for processing
participates in field experience meetings, as required
Placement coordinators (PCs) are responsible for securing and assigning pre-service teacher field experience placements to ensure degree and teacher certification requirements. They match each pre-service teacher to available mentor teachers, following specific program guidelines and restrictions. Special requests and extenuating circumstances are accommodated to the greatest extent possible. PCs work closely with school staff as well as field experience staff to recruit and register mentor teachers from the Greater Edmonton area, and regional locations across Alberta.
Placement Coordinator Roles & Responsibilities
maintaining a current and accurate database of all Education undergraduate students enrolled in a field experience course.
the day-to-day operation of the EDFX database to facilitate and record approximately 2000 pre-service teaching placements made each year in the Greater Edmonton area, as well as regionally across Alberta. There may also be some out-of-province and international placements.
determining an alternative placement if the initial placement is not possible.
review and update field experience processes, guidelines, and expectations.
development and distribution of field experience information for pre-service teachers, mentor teachers, university facilitators, school coordinators, field experience associates, and other field experience stakeholders.
monitoring the receipt of pre-service teacher assessment forms to ensure completeness and final grade entry.
ensuring pre-service teacher access to the official final assessment document.
maintaining accurate lists for placement communication and tracking purposes.
providing statistical report information regarding placements to senior Faculty of Education administrative staff.
general clerical and administrative support and other related duties, including assisting with special projects and events, as required.
