I have an interest in the construction of composite indicators to measure multidimensional well-being and its inequality. My experience includes serving as a member of the Statistical Advisory Panel of the Human Development Report of the UNDP and acting as a consultant for the UNDP and the OECD.
Projects:
A micro-level Human Development Index (MiHDI) (2024). I am preparing a background paper for the UNDP on how a micro-level preference-senstivite index of Human Development can be constructed.
Rethinking the measurement of Human Development (2022 - 2023). I chaired a broad consultation with experts on the measurement of Human Development in collaboration with the International Science Council (ISC) and the UNDP.
An Inequality-sensitive Better Life Index (2014- 2015). I prepared a background paper for the OECD on how inequality can be integrated into the Better Life Index, resulting in a OECD working paper and subsequent publication.
I have an interest in the implementation and implications of well-being and long-term care policies, particularly in cash-for-care policies for persons with disabilities (the Personal Budget (PVB) in Flanders) and the funding of old-age residential care. I am a board member of the Steunpunt Welzijn, Volksgezondheid en Gezin, which provides policy-oriented research on well-being, health, and family policies.
Projects (in Dutch):
Understanding the drivers of non-take-up of the free assistance to new holders of a Personal Budget (2024). This project studies the factors contributing to the non-take-up of free assistance provided to PVB budget holders.
Understanding the effects of the partial disposition of the Personal Budget (2022-2023). This research explores the impacts of the partial disposition of personal budgets, the so-called "deelbudgetten" in Priority Group 2 [Report, Hearing in Flemish Parliament (from 5:40); De Standaard].
Research into the deployment of staff in residential care centers (2020). This study focuses on adapting staff deployment to the changing care and support needs of residents in residential care centers [Report].
A comparison of the funding of residential care centers based on the Katz scale and the case-mix index model (2020). In this thought experiment in the context of a revision of the staffing standards in residential care centers, a comparison is made between the current funding distribution based on the Katz scale and the distribution according to a case-mix index model [Report].
The use of Personal Budgets for disabled persons within the Framework of old-age residential care centers (2018-2019). This project investigates how personal budgets are utilized by disabled individuals in old-age residential care settings [Report].
I have an interest in the impact of socio-economic policies on inequality and poverty. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I participated in the COVIVAT consortium, which studied the distributional impact of the coronavirus in Belgium.
Projects:
Towards a Flemish poverty indicator set (2021). This study explores alternative methods of measuring poverty in Flanders. I contributed a chapter on the measurement of cumulative deprivation.
Distributional impact of the COVID-19 shock on household incomes in Belgium (2021). This study investigates the impact of the partial lockdown that started mid-March on monthly household incomes in April 2020.
